Photo of the Week: Malian migrants rescued at sea

The UNHCR estimates that 137,000 people crossed the Mediterranean this year (from January to June). So far this year, at least 1,900 refugees or migrants have died or are missing at sea, compared to 3,400 for the whole of 2014. More than 22,000 people have died trying to reach Europe since 2000.

MSF is operating three search-and-rescue ships in the Mediterranean: Phoenix, Bourbon Argos and Dignity I.

Dignity I rescued 113 people on Friday 3rd of July – the majority from Mali, as well as some from Guinea, Senegal and Ivory Cost. They were  transferred to Phoenix, to be brought to Italy.
