Guinea-Bissau 1998

Displacement of population

By the end of June 1998, between 200,000 and 300,000 people fled Bissau city as result of the conflict which broke out on June 7 between troops loyal to president João Bernardo Vieira and insurgents.

There has been a huge displacement of populations towards the cities located along the main routes of the country. An MSF team arrived on 18 June to launch a medical programme.

This is an area where cholera is endemic, and the lack of drinking water, food and medicines could
lead to epidemic outbreaks and malnutrition.
