El Salvador

When El Salvador was struck by hurricane Mitch on 31 October 1998, MSF set up an emergency programme in the country. This involved the supply of 50 health centres and five hospitals and the installation of drinking-water and sanitation facilities in ten villages. MSF also provided accommodation for the stricken population.

In 1999, MSF continued its drinking-water and sanitation programmes and ran a health campaign in the western and eastern parts of the country within the framework of the national reconstruction programme.
