Western Equatoria has the highest maternal mortality (2,327 deaths per 100.000 live births) in South Sudan, which in turn has one of the highest rates of maternal deaths in the world (2,054 deaths/ 100,000 live births). 

Cultural practices, traditional beliefs, social and economic constraints continue to hamper access to healthcare. MSF IEC (Information Education and Communication) teams conduct various community outreach activities throughout the state; spreading health messages and creating awareness on various health issues.

Yambio town has a population of about 130,220 people. Since 2006, MSF has been working in the state supporting various medical activities in the Yambio State Hospital, which receives referrals from all over Western Equatoria State.
